7.62×54mmR sniper loads
More arguments about SVD accuracy are really arguments about ammunition. The rifle was designed around a purpose-built sniper load, and fed anything else it performs like a different rifle. This page covers what those loads are.

LPS — the one you will actually find
LPS is the general-purpose steel-core ball that made up the overwhelming bulk of Soviet and Warsaw Pact 7.62×54mmR production, and it is most of what survives on the surplus market. It was designed to be manufactured in enormous quantity for machine guns and rifles alike. It was not designed to shoot small groups.
An SVD fed LPS is doing exactly what it was built to do — put fire on a man-sized target at a few hundred metres — but judging the rifle's accuracy on this ammunition is judging it on the wrong thing.
7N1 — the SVD's own cartridge
Developed alongside the rifle and introduced in 1966, 7N1 is what the SVD's reputation was built on. The differences from ball are deliberate and all point the same way:
- Extruded propellant in place of coarser ball powder, for more consistent burning and lower velocity spread
- Boat-tail bullet, improving ballistic coefficient and reducing dispersion at distance
- A composite core — a steel core forward with a lead "knocker" in the base and an air pocket in the nose. The air pocket destabilises the bullet on impact; the lead base helps the projectile obturate and stabilise in flight
- Tighter manufacturing tolerances throughout
Russian sources have claimed 7N1 to be on the order of two and a half times more precise than the LPS and Type L loads it replaced in the sniper role. That is a manufacturer-adjacent figure and the exact multiple should be taken loosely, but the direction is not in dispute and matches what shooters report.
7N14 — armour, not accuracy
7N1 was superseded in 1999 by 7N14, driven by the spread of body armour rather than by any deficiency in accuracy. 7N14 keeps the same external form and the same nominal 9.8 g projectile at around 830 m/s, but replaces the core arrangement with a sharpened hardened-steel penetrator.
In Russian testing against 10 mm armour plate at 250 m, 7N14 reportedly defeated the plate consistently where 7N1 did not. Accuracy is broadly comparable; the point of the change was penetration.
The 1975 twist-rate change — why your rifle may not like 7N1
This is the part that resolves a lot of arguments, and it is a property of the barrel, not the ammunition.
The SVD was originally rifled with a 320 mm (1:12.6") twist, chosen around the heavier, longer sniper projectile. In 1975 this was changed to 240 mm (1:9.4") — a faster twist — so that the rifle could stabilise the full range of general-issue ammunition: LPS ball, and especially tracer and armour-piercing incendiary loads, whose construction needs more spin.
It was a deliberate trade, and it was not free. Russian figures put the cost at roughly 19% precision with 7N1. Expressed as the acceptance standard for a five-shot group's extreme vertical spread:

This is not only a historical detail. The current-production Hungarian FÉG HD-18 is rifled at 320 mm — it sits on the pre-1975 side of the trade, and favours lighter bullets accordingly. So does the civilian Tigr.
Two things follow from this.
First, an early SVD and a late SVD are not the same rifle for accuracy purposes, and comparing group sizes across the 1975 boundary without accounting for twist is comparing different things.
Second, the familiar complaint that an SVD "only shoots about 2 MOA" is frequently a rifle doing exactly what it was specified to do. The post-1975 standard was written around general-issue ammunition. A 2 MOA result with bulk LPS from a 240 mm barrel is not a fault — it is the design brief. The site's FAQ has long made the same point from the shooter's end; the twist change is the engineering reason behind it.
Identifying it
Tip colour is the usual field method, and it is not reliable on its own. Painted tip markings were applied inconsistently across decades and factories, surplus has been repackaged repeatedly, and 7N1 in particular turns up both with and without a distinguishing tip. Headstamp, packaging markings and lot documentation are better evidence than a colour.
If a seller's only evidence that a case of surplus is 7N1 is the tip colour, treat the claim as unproven.
What this means in practice
If you are trying to work out what your rifle will do:
- Test with the best ammunition you can obtain, not with bulk ball
- Record which lot produced which group — 7.62×54mmR surplus varies enormously between lots, more than between headstamps
- Let the barrel cool. The standard SVD barrel is not free-floated and point of impact walks as it heats — a characteristic the SVDM was specifically revised to address
- Check the optic and mount before blaming the rifle. A worn side rail or a tired PSO-1 will cost more accuracy than most ammunition differences
